Bettendorf Man Charged In Federal Fraud Indictment

 

U. S. Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker, Southern District of Iowa, and Special Agent in Charge John G. Kavanagh of the Omaha Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that the Federal Grand Jury for the Southern District of Iowa, on June 10, 2008, returned an indictment against Kyle D. Williamson of Bettendorf, Iowa. The indictment charges Williamson with one count of bank fraud, two counts of aggravate identify theft and three counts of forged securities.

Today, Williamson was arrested by Special Agents of the FBI Quad Cities Resident Agency and Iowa Department of Public Safety - Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), with the assistance of the Bettendorf Police Department.

Williamson was transported to the U.S. District Court in Davenport for an initial appearance and arraignment that was held at 1:30 p.m. today. Following Williamson’s appearance and arraignment, he was ordered to be detained by Magistrate Judge Thomas J. Shields pending a detention hearing on Friday Afternoon. Williamson’s trial date has been set for August 18th.

The maximum penalty for bank fraud is imprisonment of not more than 30 years, a fine of not more than one million dollars, or both such imprisonment and fine. The offense of aggravated identify theft has a sentence of imprisonment of two years. The offense of forged securities has a maximum penalty of imprisonment of not more than ten years, a fine of not more than $250,000 dollars, or both such imprisonment and fine.

Williamson also faces state charges being filed by the State of Iowa’s Office of the Attorney General. As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Iowa Department of Public Safety – Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, Area Prosecutor’s Division, and is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
