June 29, 2007

United States Attorney Matt M. Dummermuth announced today that a man who robbed Farmers State Bank, in Marion, Iowa, in December 2003 was sentenced on June 28, 2007, to over 14 years in federal prison.

COLLIN MCDONALD, age 27, from Kansas City, Missouri, received the prison term after a plea of guilty on November 28, 2006, to bank robbery.

At the guilty plea, MCDONALD admitted he robbed the Farmers State Bank branch on Collins Road in Marion, Iowa, on December 5, 2003.

MCDONALD was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Judge Reade found MCDONALD carried a knife during the robbery, lied about that fact, and tried to later convince his accomplice, Tiffany Callahan, to conceal the information from investigators. MCDONALD and Callahan were arrested in Lincoln, Nebraska, several days after the robbery. The two had holed up in a motel room in Lincoln. They were arrested after a several-hour standoff with FBI agents and police.

After he was arrested in Lincoln, MCDONALD was jailed in Missouri on additional federal bank robbery charges and state forgery charges. MCDONALD attempted to escape from custody while in Missouri and was convicted and sentenced on several charges - including attempted escape, bank robbery, armed criminal action, and forgery - before being brought to Iowa to face charges.

MCDONALD was sentenced to serve 175 months’ imprisonment to run consecutively to the undischarged terms of imprisonment on prior Missouri federal and state sentences. In deciding to order the sentences to be served consecutively to each other, Judge Reade noted MCDONALD’s violent criminal history and the impact of his crimes on the victims. A special assessment of $100 was imposed, and he was ordered to make $8,315 in restitution to Farmers State Bank. He must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

MCDONALD is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Richard L. Murphy and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
