United States Attorney Matt M. Dummermuth announced today that a woman who aided and abetted an illegal gambling operation was sentenced yesterday to one year of probation. PAULA KELLEY, 37, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received her sentence after an October 23, 2006, guilty plea to one count of aiding and abetting the operation of an illegal gambling business. At the guilty plea, KELLEY admitted she aided and abetted others in the conducting of an illegal gambling business from May 1999 until September 21, 2002. During this time, KELLEY rented a portion of her business’s office space to those operating the gambling business. KELLEY also obtained telephone services in her name for use in the gambling business. Eight other individuals have previously pled guilty to charges arising from the same illegal gambling operation. Seven of them have been sentenced, and the eighth does not yet have a sentencing date. KELLEY was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. KELLEY was sentenced to one year of probation. A special assessment of $100 was imposed, and she forfeited $20,000. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sean R. Berry and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cedar Rapids Police Department. United States Attorney Hach Building, Phone: 319-363-0091
